Scoring Use Cases

When you have more than one candidate, decide with a scoring framework rather than instinct. Three dimensions should be assessed together:

DimensionQuestionsSuggested weight
Volume and repeatabilityHow often does it happen each month? How standard is it?High
Business impactDoes it cut cost, raise revenue or improve satisfaction? Is it measurable?High
Implementation riskHow many systems must it integrate with? Is it regulated? How low does the error tolerance have to be?Medium, useful for filtering

Score each candidate from 1 to 5, then balance volume multiplied by impact against risk. High volume, high impact and low to medium risk is the ideal first candidate. Scenarios with high impact but high risk, such as large financial transactions or approvals with legal force, are not eliminated. They are simply left to the second or third phase, once the system has proven itself.

A common mistake: starting with the most impressive scenario, for example a complex multi step process chosen because "it will look good if we pull it off". The first project exists to build trust, not to impress. Trust comes from a first success that is unglamorous and solid.
