Choose a Single Objective

The most common reason a project dies is not technical failure. It is an unclear scope. Projects that begin with a goal like "let's improve customer experience" are still arguing about what they are building six months later.

A healthy first project is tied to one measurable sentence, and that sentence contains one verb:

  • "Let's improve customer experience, reduce cost and raise NPS."
  • "Let's bring the average handling time of billing enquiry calls below 40 seconds."

Once the objective is clear, three things become clear with it: which use case is in scope, which metric counts as the measure of success, and who decides the project is finished and on what evidence.

That clarity also changes internal communication. "We are building voice AI" meets scepticism in a budget committee. "We are running a pilot that will raise the payment commitment rate on collection calls by 15 points in three months" is assessed as a concrete investment decision.

A template: move [metric] in [process] to [target value] within [timeframe]. If you can say that sentence in one go, with no further explanation, your objective is ready.
